Kandi Burruss or Kandi Michelle Burruss-Tucker (born May 17, 1976) is an American singer, songwriter, television personality, and entrepreneur. She was a member of the group Xscape from 1993 to 2000 and has released five solo studio albums. In 2008, she wrote and produced the hit “No Scrubs” for R&B singer TLC and other songs on their fourth album.
Early life and education
Burruss was born on May 17, 1976, in College Park, Georgia, to Joyce Jones. Later, her family moved to San Francisco, where she spent some of her childhood growing up with her parents and three younger siblings Traci, Travis, and Kiesha. Through acting and singing, she began pursuing a professional acting and singing career. In 1993, Burruss formed a girl group with her friends Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, LaTocha Scott, Tamika Scott, and Kiesha Miles called Xscape.
They made their debut that same year with their second album’s lead single, “Understanding.” The song was a breakthrough hit, peaking at number 11 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Career
In addition to her work as a solo artist, Burruss has written songs for several artists, including Ashley Parker Angel, who appeared on Big Daddy Kane’s remix of his hit single “Soldier” from his debut album, the American male/female group Blaque on their self-titled debut, and TLC.
In 2001, Burruss began her own production company called Kandi Koated Entertainment. Her first mainstream success as a producer was in 2003 with the hit single “No Scrubs” by TLC, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The song received a nomination at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song of the Year and received nominations for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best R&B Song.
At the age of 15, Kandi made her on-screen debut as a member of the band Xscape on the BET network’s Teen Summit. The trio finally joined Jermaine Dupri’s So Def Recordings label following its 1992 debut. Before going on hiatus in 2005, the group had several successful single releases. Even now, the records continue to bring in residual revenue.

Burruss has been married two times. She first married her boyfriend of nine months, A.J. Jewell, on July 4, 2001; two years later, the couple divorced amicably after deciding that they were better as friends than as husband and wife. In 2007 Burruss was introduced to Todd Tucker at a mutual friend’s birthday party by producer Dallas Austin. She thought he was attractive but too short for her, so she initially dismissed him when he tried to flirt with
her. Months later, they met again through Tucker’s good friend bandmate Jazze Pha, whom Burruss had written songs with in the past. By early 2010, news broke that their relationship had ended before their planned wedding date of May 8, 2010. Tucker married another woman in the interim, but Burruss insisted that she was still waiting for him to come back to her when rumors of his infidelity surfaced.
